Three questions for the last four months of the year

Hey Reader,

Have you ever noticed that we tend to save our reflection and reset for the end or beginning of the year? Like December or January are the magical months to pay attention to what's happening in our business/productivity.

I understand why, a lot of people see the calendar year as an easy time for a reset, but what about the rest of the year?

Instead of waiting for the traditional reset, here are three questions I like to ask myself every quarter, and I encourage the members of The Acknowledgments to do the same. The reason is simple: having a clearer picture of what's supporting your journey (or not supporting it) on a more regular basis can save you from wasting your resources, whether that's time, money, emotions, energy.

That's an excellent reason for a quarterly reset.

How it works is pretty simple, just ask yourself three questions:

  • Who or what has wasted my time so far this year?
  • Who or what has supported me meaningfully the past few months?
  • What has brought me joy so far this year?

For this particular exercise, we're not looking at wins, but that's something you should still be tracking, both tangible and intangible, always. Instead, these three questions are about figuring out where those resources I mentioned above (time, money, emotions, energy, etc) need to go for the next four months, and sometimes more importantly: what you can let go of or cut out right now.

And here's a bonus question: what is one thing I can achieve before this year ends?

Just one thing. I don't want you to write a to-do list. This isn't a "resolution" that you make in January. This is an acknowledgment and a promise of what you know you're capable of in the next four months. Write it on a sticky note, put it where you'll see it, and work toward that thing!

If you want to tell me what your one thing is, or tell me something you realized is really working for you (or really NOT working for you), hit reply!

P.S. I'm on vacation for the next two weeks. Going to Nashville for some music and fun, and then doing a staycation for some music and beach. I'll respond to everyone when I'm back at my desk in early September!!

Hi! Today's sponsorship is once again worth $3 a click, so if you're so inclined... Also, I'm going to do a transparent post about what we've earned from sponsorships, but that will have to wait until I'm back from vacation in September!

Hey Reader, Longtime readers might remember when I used to do the 3@3. New readers, welcome to the explanation: a few years back, I used to go live once a week at 3pm and answer 3 questions that had been pre-submitted. It was all live, no editing, just raw talk. Turns out, I've got a pile of those clips sitting around, and honestly, most of the advice hasn't aged a day. Would I add some information or say it a bit different? Maybe. But these are still so solid, I decided to resurrect them and...
