Why seeing real-time feedback changes everything

Hey ,

Want to opt out of hearing more about the deep point of view workshop? Click here and you won’t receive any more of these emails!

Over my years in publishing, I’ve done hundreds of live critiques.

Candid cold reads where I’m seeing a manuscript for the first time, right there in front of an audience.

And honestly? They’re one of the most educational and helpful things I do.

I’ve had authors who received live critiques come to me years later—sometimes at conferences, sometimes in emails—to tell me they got publishing contracts, published books, and never forgot the feedback they received in that moment.

But here's what's equally powerful: the other writers in the room also get a transformative experience

The ones who aren’t getting their work critiqued, but are sitting there reading along, watching an experienced editor work through someone else’s pages.

They get to see exactly how I approach a manuscript, what I look for, where my eye goes first, and how I identify both strengths and opportunities.

Here's your chance to experience that in the Deep POV Workshop on July 8th.

I’ll be doing live critique of real scenes from real manuscripts. Not polished examples or theoretical scenarios—actual work-in-progress pages from writers just like you.

And here’s why that makes all the difference:

You’ll see the thought process in action. Instead of just hearing “use deep POV,” you’ll watch me identify specific lines where a writer could show emotion instead of telling it, or where they could add internal dialogue to create intimacy.

You’ll learn from patterns you recognize. When I point out that a character is “watching” instead of experiencing, you might think, “Oh wait, I do that too.” Those lightbulb moments happen when you see your own writing habits reflected in someone else’s work.

You’ll understand the “why” behind the feedback. It’s one thing to read that filter words create distance. It’s another thing entirely to see me highlight “she felt angry” in a real scene and explain what changing it can do for a scene.

You’ll get insights that apply to your own work. Every piece of feedback I give will spark ideas for your own manuscript. You’ll find yourself thinking, "I've done this" or "I have a moment like this" or "I can do this here too".

That’s the power of live critique. It’s not just about the writers whose scenes get reviewed—it’s about everyone in the room learning from real examples, real problems, and real solutions.

And here’s the best part:

You don’t have to submit anything or put yourself on the spot. You can sit back, take notes, and absorb all the insights without any pressure.

But if you do want to learn from seeing your own work analyzed, there’s still time. The catch is...you have to be a member of my Just Keep Writing group to submit your work for a chance to get a live review.

If you’re not currently a Just Keep Writing member but want the chance to submit a scene for live critique, you can join JKW (it's $9/month, cancel anytime) and purchase the workshop to be eligible.

Just Keep Writing members who also register for the workshop can submit scenes for potential selection (selection is not guaranteed but I will be doing at least 2-3 scenes). It’s a great way to get both the workshop content and the possibility of personalized feedback on your work, but also join a community that keeps you focused on writing!

The Deep POV Workshop is July 8th at 2pm EST.

Get it for $30 today (price goes up July 8th!)

P.S. If you’ve ever been in a critique group or workshop where someone’s feedback suddenly made everything click for you, you know exactly what I’m talking about. That’s what we’re creating in this workshop—those “aha!” moments that transform how you think about your writing.

I know how powerful social proof can be, and I wanted you to hear from some of the people who attended the live workshop, and see just how good it was. My favorite part? Still the live critiques.
