Why your voice matters more than ever (especially now)

Hey Reader,

I’ve been thinking a lot about AI lately. (Haven’t we all?)

Specifically, like many of you, I’ve been thinking about what happens to fiction authors, in a world where we’re seeing more and more people use AI to write, and publish, novels.

Because thinking about author careers is my job, and I see so many of you frustrated, frightened and just wondering...what's going to happen?

Here’s what I keep coming back to: AI can mimic structure. It can follow formulas. It can even create technically correct prose. Sure, it can even create a plot (based on its pre-learned knowledge).

But there’s one thing AI absolutely cannot do.

It cannot create the kind of deep, authentic connection between a character and a reader that makes someone stay up until 3am because they have to know what happens next.

That connection? That’s purely human driven. That’s the author’s voice. The unique character traits. The reason the reader cares deeply and wants…no needs to know more.

And it’s exactly what separates authors who build lasting careers from those who get lost in the noise.

Because AI can’t write the human to human (or human to character, as the case may be here) connection that keeps readers invested in a story.

I’m talking about the moment when a reader thinks, “Oh my god, I love this character. I need her to be happy.” or "I totally get why she killed him and buried the bones in the flower garden. I would have helped."

It's the moment when your character becomes so real to the reader, that the reader cares about nothing (not the dishes, not work, not sleep, not cooking dinner, not watching TV or browsing Facebook) but staying with that character, in their world and going on the journey with them.

That’s not AI. That’s not a formula. That’s you, using your uniquely human understanding of what it means to be human, and translating that onto the page through narrative, through details, through that dreaded thing we call deep point of view (lol, some of you are like…oh helllll no, not this topic, it’s HARD).

But here’s the thing that makes this an important writing skill to tackle, makes it something that we do need to talk about and I do want you to spend time learning: deep POV isn’t just about writing technique.

It’s about survival in a marketplace that’s about to get very, very crowded. (Really, who are we kidding, it’s already very, very crowded, but getting even more so every day now that there’s AI.)

Why will deep point of view make a pivotal difference?

Because while AI can write a novel, it can’t write your novel. It can’t capture the way your heroine’s anxiety manifests as reorganizing her spice rack at midnight. It can’t nail the specific way your hero's guilt shows up as him mowing the neighbor's lawn.

Those details? That voice? That’s your competitive advantage. That’s what’s going to make readers choose your books over the thousands of others (AI-generated or otherwise) they could be reading instead.

But here’s the catch: most authors think they’re already writing in deep POV when they’re not.

They think because they’re writing in first person, or because they have a lot of internal narrative, they’ve got it covered.

Mmmm, wrong and wrong.

I’ve edited over 1,000 manuscripts in my 20+ years in publishing, and I can tell you that actual good, true deep POV—the kind that creates unbreakable reader-character bonds—is rarer than you think.

But it’s not an impossible skill, it’s just one that often takes a little more thought and care to weave in.

Which is exactly why I’m hosting the Deep POV Workshop on Tuesday, July 8th at 2pm EST.

This isn’t about keeping up with trends. This is about future-proofing your writing career by mastering a skill that AI will never be able to replicate: creating authentic human connection through character voice.

In this workshop, I’ll answer the three key questions every author needs to know:

What is deep point of view? (And why most authors are missing it)
Why do you want it? (Beyond just “better writing”)
How do you get it? (Six specific ways that actually work)

Plus, I’ll show you the concrete mechanics that make the difference—like why using pronouns instead of character names instantly creates intimacy, how to stop letting body parts “run the action,” and the specific way to answer “why” that connects readers to your characters every time.

You’ll also get actionable exercises you can use on your current manuscript, plus unlimited replay access so you can come back whenever you need a refresher.

Early bird pricing is $30 through July 8th, then it goes to $50.

Look, AI is here to stay. But so are readers who crave authentic human stories told by authentic human voices.

Your job isn’t to compete with AI. Your job is to be so uniquely, authentically you in the connections you create between your readers and your characters that no algorithm could ever replicate what you do.

That’s what deep POV gives you. And that’s what we’re going to work on together.

Register for the Deep POV Workshop for $30

Your voice matters. Your characters matter. And in a world of artificial everything, that authentic human connection you create through your writing matters more than ever.

You’ve got this. We've got this.

P.S. I’m curious—have you experimented with AI writing tools? What did you notice about what they could and couldn’t capture? Hit reply and let me know. I’m fascinated by what authors are discovering about the irreplaceable human elements of storytelling.
